Kids Activities

Hi kids!

I'm Dewey the Water Droplet. I'll teach you what happens to rainwater that drips off houses and trees, runs through yards, down streets and into storm drains.

It doesn't just disappear - it flows into our streams, lakes, rivers and eventually Puget Sound. When the water runs over hard surfaces, like roads and driveways, it picks up pollution.

That pollution ends up in our lakes, streams, and Puget Sound and can harm fish and wildlife.

Drain Ranger Codes to Live By

Together we have the power to clean up rivers, lakes, streams and Puget Sound. If each of us made a few simple changes, we could make a huge difference together!
  • If it's not rain, it doesn't belong in the drain. Don't pour anything down the storm drain.
  • Conserve water: Use less water at home to save more for the fish.
  • Use a fish-friendly car wash: Wash your car at a commercial car wash or on your lawn so water soaks into the ground.
  • Soak up spills: Use cardboard or kitty litter to soak up oil and chemical spills and then throw them in the trash.
  • Use compost: Start a compost pile for your food and yard waste, then use it in your yard.

Fun Activities for Kids

Volunteer to Mark Drains

Drain markers remind people that the water that flows into our storm drains goes to streams, rivers, lakes and eventually Puget Sound without treatment. Drain marking events are a great volunteer activity for children school age and older.
  • Mark drains at your school as a classroom project.
  • Mark drains with your scout troop.
  • Mark drains in your neighborhood with your family or neighbors.
