Our ballot drop boxes are very secure, have a large capacity and offer 24/7 voter convenience. The boxes are opened (in the proximity of the jurisdictions participating in each election) as soon as ballots are mailed, approximately 18 days before each election.
Drop boxes close at 8 p.m. Election Day.
Ballot drop boxes are collected daily through Election Day.

Pierce County Elections won a national award for our drop box enhancements. These enhancements help track ballot pick-up and chain of custody.
We use an app called Field Force Manager, which uses smartphones and commercial software to document ballot collection. It includes a route set-up module, checklists to ensure all tasks are completed, and the ability to upload time and date stamped pictures to document completion of each step. Checklists and pictures are used to confirm that: all boxes are opened prior to the voting period; ballot pick-up during the election; ballot boxes are closed on election night; ballots are properly picked up after the election; and boxes are completely empty when workers conduct a quality assurance check.
Using satellite antennas and a global network, the ballot pick-up team movements are displayed on the supervisor’s computer screen. Pierce County Elections knows at all times where the ballot drop box team is located and their direction of travel. This ensures the assigned route is followed without deviation and that the team is on-time, helping document ballot chain of custody.
