Victims are allowed to present to the judge a victim impact statement that explains how the crime has affected them. The victim may also speak to the judge, in open court, at the sentencing hearing.
In deciding a sentence, the judge must typically sentence the defendant within a standard sentencing range set by Washington State statute. The judge may also order restitution (paying the victim for costs related to the crime), fines (paid to the court), probation, jail or prison.
