Appeals Division

The appeals division protects our community, State, and, at times, the nation by defending criminal convictions.  Most of the division’s cases are litigated through written briefing as well as oral argument in Division II of the Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court; however, its cases may be litigated in the United States District Court, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, or the United States Supreme Court.  In addition to its appellate practice, the appeals division supports the trial teams by advising deputy prosecutors on the law applicable to cases pending in Superior and District Courts.  The appeals division’s dedicated team of deputy prosecutors, legal assistants, and law student interns also partner with the criminal division by drafting standardized charging documents, pleadings, and jury instructions in accordance with prevailing state and federal law.  The appeals division serves the public by ensuring that appellate review is conducted fairly, impartially, and consistent with the interests of justice.
