Social Media Posting Guidelines:
Pierce County utilizes and maintains social media channels to communicate information to the public about emergencies, programs, services, projects, issues, events, and activities that pertain to the community in Pierce County, Washington.
We have an important duty to ensure the information posted is accurate and consistent on our various accounts. We respect the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the constitutional right to freedom of speech. Since Pierce County’s accounts are open to the public, information in the comments is not vetted and we cannot vouch for its accuracy.
Pierce County’s social media platforms are regularly monitored by Pierce County staff. Any communication with or on the County’s social media accounts are subject to public record. However, these accounts are not monitored 24/7. No one should utilize our social media accounts to seek emergency services or assistance. Anyone in need of emergency assistance should call 9-1-1.
Pierce County reserves the right to remove inappropriate posts and comments on its social media channels containing, but not limited to:
- Content that encourages violence or illegal activity
- Is in favor, or opposition to political campaigns or ballot measures
- Contains profane language or content
- Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination based on race, creed, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected class
- Sexual content of any kind
- Solicitations of commerce
- Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems
- Comments that contain images or other content that violate the intellectual property or copyright rights of someone else
- Threats to any person, group, or organization
All social media sites maintained by Pierce County shall adhere to applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies. Social media sites are subject to the Washington State Public Records Act (RCW 40.14).
Users who post comments contrary to this Terms of Use policy may be removed, flagged and prohibited from future participation on Pierce County social media accounts.
The Pierce County Social Media Terms of Use is managed by the Pierce County Communications Department in partnership with the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Social media channels are internet pages owned and operated by social media companies. All these companies have their own policies and standards regarding what may or may not be posted and the actions they may take with regarding unauthorized posts.
