What is Groundwater Flooding?

Only a few places in Pierce County experience groundwater flooding. Soils in these areas allow water to easily move to the surface. 

A significant amount of rain in the fall can sometimes lead to groundwater flooding the following spring. 

Groundwater flooding is very slow to arrive and leave. People have time to move items to higher ground when groundwater flooding occurs.

Recent Events

In early spring 2017, groundwater flooding occurred in the Graham, Frederickson and Spanaway communities following a very wet fall. The flooding lasted several weeks.
