Volunteer Veteran Mentors

Volunteer Veteran Mentors possess important roles and responsibilities within the justice system. Mentors are asked to engage, encourage, and empower fellow Veterans. Mentors are required to look at each Veteran’s situation because each have individual needs to address their trauma. Most Veteran issues can be handled simply by providing guidance and utilizing past experiences to relate to their struggles. More difficult subjects may require additional assistance that the mentor can assist with by gaining a resolution to the problem utilizing resources available to Veterans.

As a Veteran Mentor, you must be able to work with groups as well as individually with justice involved Veterans. You will also be required to work with court personnel, the VA, therapeutic counselors, probation, case management and county personnel. You are asked to use individual ingenuity in some cases with the end goal being a successful completion of the Veterans Court and increased quality of life. This is an opportunity to help make changes in the lives of our fellow Veterans that may have experienced great trauma or need assistance adjusting to civilian life.

Not all clients will have access to the VA benefits, so it is necessary to be versed in what agencies outside of the VA can provide for assistance. These services include but are not limited to treatment, housing, education, and all other assistance required to sustain a meaningful life. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Veteran Mentor Coordinator or the District Court Coordinator.

Veteran Mentor Requirements include:

• Have a genuine concern for fellow Veterans
• Maintain Law-Abiding Behavior
• Have served in the US Armed Forces
• Follow all court policies and procedures
• Attend any required training
• Do not engage in drug use, alcohol use, sexual relations or other unlawful activities with your Veteran Clients
• Immediately notify the Mentor Coordinator if a Veteran Client engages in illegal activities, or becomes homicidal or suicidal
