The town of Wilkeson grew up with the coal-mining industry and shares much history with the neighboring small towns.
At one time, the town had a population around 3,000 and featured a number of ovens used for cooking coal in to coke to serve iron smelters in Tacoma.
Today, Wilkeson’s population is around 400 and provides a small-town atmosphere just far enough from the Puget Sound urban areas to be peaceful but still convenient.
