Family benefit changes

You will learn more about your benefit options when you attend New Employee Orientation. At orientation, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how to enroll in health insurance and retirement benefits.

Eligibility requirements and benefit coverage effective dates are defined by each employee's benefit group:  

PEBB Group

Non-represented employees, District Court Judges &
Represented: 120J, 120W, 612S, U612, C28PSS, Captain's Association, and SEIU 925 employees

As a new hire, all of your PEBB benefits will begin on the first day of the month following your hire date. 

If your hire date is the first working day of the month, PEBB benefits begin on that day.

Teamsters Group

Represented employees: 117A, 117C, 1889, 1889CS, 3752CN, 3752LT, CWA37083, JUVG, PCC, PPAA, U120, U17A, U17S, U297, U313, U483

To become eligible for WA Teamsters Welfare Trust medical coverage, you must first be an active employee for a minimum of 80 hours in one month. The following month (or "lag month"), the County and the employee will make their share of the premium payment, for coverage effective the 1st day of the following month.

Employees are eligible for dental, life, and disability coverage beginning the 1st day of the month following 30 days of employment. When the first day of employment is the first working day of the month, employees are eligible for coverage beginning the 1st day of the following month.

Access the Benefit Change – PEBB Newly Eligible task in your Workday inbox to enroll in benefits. 

When enrolling dependents in medical and/or dental, dependent verification is required. 

Pierce County Benefits office must receive your Workday benefits enrollment task and valid dependent verification documents no later than 31 days after your hire date.   

If the enrollment and DV forms are not received or are received late, PEBB Program rules require enrollment in the following default plans: Uniform Medical Plan Classic, Uniform Dental Plan, basic life insurance, and the 60% employee-paid long-term disability insurance as a single subscriber (dependents will not be enrolled). In addition, you are subject to the tobacco use premium surcharge (WAC 182-08-197(1)(b)). 

Teamsters Group

Your benefits enrollment has two steps:

  1. Access the Benefit Change – Newly Eligible Teamsters task in your Workday inbox  (this is for dental and all voluntary benefits). 
  2. Complete the Teamsters medical enrollment form to enroll in medical. 

When enrolling dependents in medical and/or dental, dependent verification is required. 

The Teamsters medical enrollment form and dependent verification documents (if applicable) can be sent to Benefits by office routing or emailed to [email protected]

Make sure to complete both steps, including valid dependent verification documents if applicable, no later than 31 days after your hire date.

Waiving Teamsters Medical coverage or the Disability Waiver is not permitted.

Dependent Eligibility

Employees may enroll eligible family members on their benefit coverage upon hire, within 30 days of a "qualifying life event," or during the County’s annual Open Enrollment period. Employees are required to provide documentation supporting dependent eligibility upon enrollment.  

Dependents you can enroll in PEBB Benefits:

  • Spouse
  • State-registered domestic partner
  • Children (including children of your spouse, children whose support is your legal obligation in anticipation of adoption, children of your state-registered domestic partner, and children specified in a court order or divorce decree for whom you have a legal obligation to provide support or health care coverage.
