Project Update

Construction is expected to begin late summer 2023 and continue into 2024. During this time there will be construction activity throughout the corridor, but it will not be active every day along each segment. A timeline will be shared with those property owners that have access through the project area.

About the Project

Pierce County’s Pipeline Trail will be a paved trail along the Tacoma Water Pipeline between 72nd St E and 94th Ave E. This trail will connect the existing Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail in South Hill to the recently constructed Pipeline Trail within the City of Tacoma, providing residents with expanded non-motorized commuting and recreational opportunities, supporting healthy active living.

The preliminary design is complete for Pierce County’s Pipeline Trail. Engineering and design are underway for the construction of Phase 1, connecting Tacoma’s Pipeline Trail at 72nd St. E. and Waller Rd. E. to Orangegate Park, with construction beginning in 2023.

Future efforts will include the completion of Pipeline Trail to South Hill with integration into Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail and Heritage Recreation Center. Further out, Pierce County has prioritized continued trail and bike infrastructure development to connect Foothills Trail, another 21 miles of existing Regional Trail. This longer-term connection has long been a vision of Regional Trail advocates with the "Tahoma to Tacoma" vision connecting communities from Commencement Bay to Mt. Rainier National Park.
