October 2 Project Update
The force main is now installed. New pavement is complete along Morrison Road West and 72nd Ave Ct West. Crews will be back on site beginning Oct. 5 working in the 2800 block of Morrison Road West to upgrade the electrical system and replace existing pumps. The remaining work will have minimal impacts for drivers in the area. The work will be mostly off of the roadway at the pump station site.

About the project
The Hidden Hills pump station was built in the 1980s and is nearing the end of its 30-year design life. This project will extend the service life of the facility by upgrading electrical systems and pumps. The project will also install approximately a half-mile of new sanitary sewer force main, redirecting wastewater flow and increasing capacity for the continued growth of University Place.
The new force main will be connected to the pump station and will run south along Morrison Road West, east along 35th Street West, and south along 72nd Avenue Court West. The force main will connect to an existing 10-inch sewer main located on a City of University Place property south of 72nd Avenue Court West.
The Hidden Hills pump station currently pumps flows to a gravity sewer system that flows to the City of Tacoma’s sewer system before being pumped back to Pierce County’s Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. Because of growth in the City of University Place the wastewater flow being sent to the City of Tacoma has exceeded our contractual limits. Instead of renegotiating our contract with the City of Tacoma, Pierce County has decided to build a new force main and redirect flows south.
How will this project affect you?
Installation of the new force main will require crews to cut a six-foot-deep trench along the roads in the project area. Morrison Road West, 35th Street West, and 72nd Avenue Court West will remain open during construction, although the roads may be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic in work areas. Flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic. Motorists should expect delays.
Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
What is a pump station and force main?
A pump station is needed when gravity sewer service is not practical. It operates by storing wastewater until it reaches a certain level, and then pumps it into a sewer force main. The sewer force main conveys wastewater using pumps and pump stations to gravity sewers which then flow to a wastewater treatment plant.
