In 2018, Pierce County Council directed Parks to study the feasibility of installing a roof over the horse arena at Frontier Park. Parks hired an architectural consultant (BOA architects) to create a feasibility study to cover the entire horse arena (approximately 83,240 sq. ft.). The study considered material options and an estimated cost for the project.
A year later, an updated study was done to consider covering a smaller section of the arena (24,000 sq. ft.). In 2022, the Washington State Legislature provided $1.8 million for the design and construction of the smaller cover.
The architectural firm Helix Design has been hired to work on design and cost estimating for the project. Due to the rise in construction costs since the original study was completed, additional funds are needed to build a cover over 1/3 of the arena. The project is on hold while additional funding is identified. This hold will result in at least a one-year delay in the project.
