Why is the shuttle being offered?
During dry dock inspections for the Steilacoom II, the contractor working for Pierce County discovered unexpected damage to the #2 end propeller shaft that required extensive repair work to correct. Repair of this damage is complete but delayed the overall drydock project.

As a result, the additional departures on Friday, Sunday, and Monday are canceled for the weekends of May 26, June 2, and June 9.

To help meet the peak-season demand, we are encouraging visitors and commuters to use the walk-on service.

The Steilacoom II is now expected to return to Steilacoom on June 14. Once back at the Steilacoom Terminal, HMS crews will need a few days to restock the boat with safety equipment and ensure it is ready for service. Thank you for your patience during this time.
  Travel Tips:
  • The shuttle is free to all ferry passengers. You do not need to show your ticket to the driver upon boarding. Please consult the shuttle schedule and wait by the shuttle stop area marked with the Pierce County signage.
  • Walk-on passengers are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance online at PierceCountyWa.gov/FerryTickets or via the City Experiences App. All fares are round trip and collected at the Steilacoom Terminal.
  • If you are traveling from mainland, park at the Pierce College’s Fort Steilacoom Campus in Parking Lot D (South Overflow). Please remove all valuables and lock your vehicle before boarding the shuttle. Pierce County does not assume any responsibility for loss of personal property or damages to vehicles.
  • If the walk-on option does not fit with your travel plans, drive-on passengers should consider taking an earlier ferry or carpooling.
  • Please note that on a typical weekend, the busiest sailing is the 2:45 p.m. departure from Steilacoom.
Additional Information
  • In the event the shuttle is running behind schedule, the ferry will not be able to adjust the schedule and will leave the dock at the scheduled departure time.
  • Passengers with disabilities are encouraged to drive on the ferry.
  • Strollers may be brought onboard the shuttle, but you will need to carry them onboard yourselves.
  • The shuttles are not equipped with bike racks; bicycles are also not allowed onboard the shuttles.
  • Service animals are allowed on the shuttle and in the passenger cabin of the ferry.
  • Pets are allowed on the ferry deck and in cars. However, pets are not allowed in the passenger cabin of the ferry nor the shuttles.
