2019 Alzheimer's Caregiver Conference

Saturday, September 28, 2019

What we eat - and how we eat - has a profound impact on us. Join caregivers from around the region to learn how nutrition and diet can hinder or help people with dementia. Get hints for providing nutritious and attractive food options that will increase variety and help maintain health.

Alzheimer’s Conference Focuses on Healthy Meals and Alternatives

“So, what do you want to eat?”  That simple question can strike fear and dismay in the hearts of many people with dementia and their caregivers.  Not only does our sense of taste diminish with age but other issues may cause people to shy away from food – or seek out less-than-healthy alternatives at meal time.

“Food for Thought: Nutrition and Dementia” is the theme of the 2019 Pierce County Alzheimer’s Caregiver Conference.  The event is provided for caregivers, family members and friends of individuals who experience Alzheimer’s or another dementia.  The event will provide practical information, tools and support to aid in their care of a loved one.  The conference is free and open to the public.

A full lineup of presentations has been scheduled.  Each talk will provide family members and caregivers with creative ideas and alternatives to help make meal time a much more pleasant experience.  Topics include:
Unlocking the Healing Power of Food
Alzheimer’s Focused Menus
Alternative Therapies and Resources
The Art of Alzheimer’s
Dance Happy
Music Mends Minds
In addition to the informative presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to speak with professionals and providers from the South Puget Sound region.

“The Washington State Plan to Address Alzheimer’s was issued in 2016,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources.  “One of the goals of the comprehensive plan is to ensure the well-being and safety of people living with dementia and their family caregivers.  One of the best ways to accomplish this is by making sure that people are receiving a nourishing diet to maintain their health and support their immune system.”

Alzheimer’s is now the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and continues to grow.  Between 2000 and 2015 deaths from heart disease decreased by 11%.  At the same time deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased by 123%.  It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.  Today, one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

The free conference is sponsored by Pierce County Aging & Disability Resources in collaboration with the Health Care Providers Council of Pierce County.  It will be held Saturday, September 28th at Bellarmine Preparatory School, 2300 S. Washington Street in Tacoma.  Doors open at 8 a.m.; program begins at 9 a.m. sharp and concludes at 1 p.m.  While the event is free reservations are requested online at Brown Paper Tickets (https://bpt.me/4310403) or by calling 253-798-8787.  For more information about the event call the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center at 253-798-4600.
