How to Spoil Your Retirement

Saturday, January 23, 2021

Judging by the television ads, all you need to have for a successful retirement – and that wonderful rocking chair – is a big bank account. Sure, money helps but retirement is so much more. Big picture retirement can easily go bad even if you have buckets of cash unless you know what to watch for. A good retirement – and a long, healthy retirement – demands lots of serious “work.” Whether you are planning on retirement in your future or have already made the leap, learn about ways people fail in retirement – and it isn’t all about money.

Workshop Surveys Retirement Mistakes

Everybody looks forward to retiring someday.  If we prepare well and have a little luck, most of us will have the opportunity to enjoy the opportunity.  But even so, there are many ways to make a mess out of retirement even if you do have money in the bank.

Pierce County Aging & Disability Resources, offers “How to Spoil Your Retirement,” a fast-paced survey of the many ways retirees can paint themselves into a corner without much effort.  The presentation will look at issues such as finances, health care, socialization, physical activities, friendships, mental health and more.  This is an information-only event.

“Everybody makes mistakes,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources.  “Some are obvious; some are hidden.  It’s helpful to take a step back and look at the most common mistakes people make in their retirement.  Many of those mistakes have little to do with financial issues.  Avoiding these missteps can make retirement enjoyable, comfortable and rewarding.”

“How to Spoil Your Retirement” will be offered two times in January.  The presentations are free but advance registration is required.

Quality of life in retirement is often dictated by things other than money.  But often these things are overlooked.  A person’s outlook on life, a sense of humor, reading, social activities with others, hobbies, volunteerism and an enjoyable part-time job are some of the things to consider.  Looking at those issues should happen months if not years before actually retiring.

Anyone of any age can attend.  Advance registration is required.  For more information about the presentations or to register by phone, call the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center at 253-798-4600 or (800) 562-0332
