Boxed or Unboxed

Wednesday, April 21, 2021

How often do we hear “more is better” and “bigger is better?” That’s very much a part of our culture, our way of life. But there comes a time when enough is enough. It could be a sense of there’s too much clutter, a need to put thing in their place or make life simpler. Or maybe it’s time to move to a new, smaller living space. But where do you start . . . and how? Learn from a professional move manager the issues involved, the pitfalls and successful techniques that will make any downsizing or moving experience more satisfying.

Explore Issus of Downsizing, Organizing and Simplifying

Nearly half (48 percent) of Americans consider their homes to be at least somewhat cluttered with items they no longer use.  One in seven Americans have a room in their home they cannot use because it is filled with things they rarely use.  And a majority of Americans (72 percent) believe they would gain more space in their homes by purging unused items, but 41 percent of Americans haven't decluttered for over a year

“Boxed or Unboxed” is an online workshop that will explore how older adults and younger families can approach downsizing, reorganizing and simplifying their home.  Whether living in a traditional single-family home, in an apartment or even in a shared living space it can be helpful to know what path would work best to accomplish the end goals.

“Downsizing has many meanings,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources.  “For some it’s just emptying the house of accumulated things.  For others it’s a matter or reorganizing, of putting things in their place.  And for others still there is a desire to move to a simplified lifestyle.  But ultimately the end goal is to have a comfortable and safe environment where we can unwind and feel at relaxed.”

“Boxed or Unboxed” will examine issues that confront many people in deciding how to downsize, what to keep or not, dealing with memories and, perhaps most importantly, simply how to get started.  The information-only presentations will be offered once in April.

Statistics tell a dramatic story.  The average size of the American home has nearly tripled in size over the past 50 years.  Each home has an average 300,000 items.  That explains why one in ten Americans rent offsite storage—the fastest growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the past four decades.  The United States has upward of 50,000 storage facilities, more than five times the number of Starbucks.

The presenter for ”Boxed or Unboxed” will be Tina Baril, owner of Monarch Transitions, LLC.  Baril is a certified Senior Move Manager.  This will be an impartial, information-only presentation online.  Advance registration is required at  Sessions are open to all.  For more information about the presentation, call the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center at 253-798-4600 or (800) 562-0332.
