Sewer main work shifts to Brookdale Road in December

Construction crews replacing a sewer main along Brookdale Road in Parkland are shifting work to the eastern end of the project this month.

The crews are replacing 5,000 feet of sewer pipe with a 72-inch diameter interceptor pipe. The project, managed by Pierce County Public Works and Utilities, is expected to be complete in February 2015.

The work began at the intersection of A Street and 133rd Street East earlier this fall with some initial groundwater monitoring. High groundwater in the area during this time of year favors shifting the construction activities onto Brookdale Road. The project will continue along Brookdale Road from 8th Avenue East to Golden Given Road East. The pavement along A Street will be restored by mid-December.

Traffic will be detoured in the immediate area of the work, but local and emergency access will be available. Traffic control signs will be posted and flaggers will assist motorists when necessary.

The existing 30-inch diameter sewer pipe is nearing its capacity of 7 million gallons per day, is heavily corroded, and is located in an area affected by high groundwater levels. Groundwater seeps into the sewer pipe, reducing its capacity to carry wastewater.
