[ARCHIVED] Prosecutor Mark Lindquist issues statement on Governor’s death penalty moratorium

“In our system of justice, the Governor has authority under the law to halt death warrants. Governor Inslee announced today that there will be a moratorium on the death penalty during his term.

“I know the Governor’s moral, ethical, and practical concerns about capital punishment are deeply felt. He is acting consistent with his concerns. While he has the authority to commute sentences, he decided instead to issue a moratorium.

“Washington law related to capital punishment is unchanged and the death penalty therefore remains a legal option in our most heinous cases. As Pierce County Prosecutor, one of my most solemn duties is the decision on whether or not to seek the death penalty. These weighty decisions are made with scrupulous attention to the law, the facts, and due process.

“As the Governor said, there is a growing national conversation about capital punishment. I look forward to participating in that dialogue.”
