[ARCHIVED] Father sentenced to 16 years for placing baby in freezer

TACOMA, WA – Today Tyler Deutsch, 26, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for beating his infant daughter and placing her in his freezer. He pleaded guilty on Jan. 31, 2014 to assault of a child in the first degree.

“Though the child has fully recovered, and we are grateful for that,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, “this was a horrible and inexplicable crime.”

On May 25, 2013, the victim’s mother left her in the defendant’s care. The defendant wanted to take a nap, but the victim was crying, so he placed her in the freezer, went to his bedroom and fell asleep. Approximately 90 minutes later, the defendant awoke to the sound of the victim’s mother returning home. He rushed to the freezer and pulled the victim out. The mother saw him pull the victim from the freezer and called 911. The victim had a body temperature of 85 degrees and was wearing only a diaper. She had blisters, a broken arm and leg, and a head injury.
