Pierce County Council takes a road trip, brings government to the people

The 1,806 square miles that comprise Pierce County can make it daunting for residents to travel all the way to Tacoma to attend a regular meeting of the County Council, so council members are holding a series of regular meetings around the county.

The next “in-district” meeting will take place Tuesday, June 17, in the unincorporated community of Vaughn, located on the Key Peninsula.

“Vaughn is a great location to hold a Council meeting because it’s somewhat central to the area and a much closer drive for most on the peninsula who would otherwise have to head across the Narrows Bridge,” said Council Vice Chair Stan Flemming, who serves the 7th District where Vaughn is located. “I’m committed – along with the rest of the Council – to making county government more accessible. I appreciate the feedback we receive from all our constituents and I’m looking forward to hearing what those in the northern part of the county have to say.”

The June 17 council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Whitmore Room of the Key Peninsula Civic Center. The address is 17010 S. Vaughn Road in Vaughn (click here for a map). Topics scheduled for discussion include amateur radio operations and timber land classification applications, among other items (subject to change). Regular council meetings also feature an open-comment period where citizens are welcome to address issues not on the meeting agenda.

Those unable to attend the June 17 meeting can watch it tape-delayed on PCTV. Visit for air dates or download the PCTV mobile app to watch on a smart device.

The Council, which normally meets on Tuesdays in its chambers in the County-City Building in downtown Tacoma, holds at least one meeting a year in each of the seven Council districts, as required by the Pierce County Charter. The next in-district meeting of the Pierce County Council is scheduled for July 8 in University Place.
