Ninth Street East between 190th Avenue East and 198th Avenue East near Lake Tapps Park will close June 23 while crews reconstruct the roadway. The road is expected to reopen by mid-August.
Traffic traveling east on Ninth Street East will be detoured north on 190th Avenue East, east along Edwards Road East, and then onto 210th Avenue East. A detour map is available at www.piercecountywa.org/9th. If severe weather impacts the work, the closure may be extended.
Pierce County will reconstruct approximately 1,500 feet of Ninth Street East to enhance safety. The roadway will be realigned and regraded to increase sight distance. Crews will also widen the lanes to 12 feet and pave six-foot shoulders, install guardrail along the roadway between Hille and Bowman lakes, and add stormwater facilities.
The closure is needed so the project contractor, SCI Infrastructure LLC, can excavate and then rebuild the roadway at a lower elevation. After the road reopens, minor lane restrictions are expected until the project is completed in September.
The contractor began preparing the road for construction on May 14. Crews removed roadside vegetation, and began to work on shoulders and storm drainage structures. Utility companies then started work to relocate their facilities in order to minimize any potential conflicts with the road construction activities.
The construction cost is approximately $883,000. The project is funded by County Road Funds and Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds.
