Pierce County Council chair supports the citizens’ right to referendum

Councilmember Dan Roach, who chairs the Pierce County Council, has announced he’ll be proposing a resolution that would direct the county prosecutor’s office to drop a recently-filed lawsuit against a Pierce County resident.

The prosecutor filed a lawsuit Feb. 27 that seeks to stop a citizen’s referendum intended to bring the county’s new general services building proposal before a vote of the people. Roach expressed concern Tuesday that the prosecutor filed the lawsuit at the request of the county executive and several individual council members.

“According to state law, the Council alone has the sole authority to direct the county prosecutor to file lawsuits on behalf of the County,” said Roach, who represents the 1st Council District. “Since the Council is the client, I believe that we should have a public forum to debate this issue and hear directly from Pierce County citizens regarding this matter.”

Roach says the full Council did not have an opportunity to meet or hold an executive session to discuss the matter prior to the prosecutor filing the suit. The resolution will be introduced at the March 10 Council meeting.
