City of University Place U.S. Open Informational Open House set for May 19

The public is invited to attend the final City of University Place U.S. Open informational open house on May 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Curtis High School cafeteria, 8425 40th St. W. in University Place.

This is the last in a series of numerous public outreach events the City of University Place, in conjunction with its partners at the USGA and Pierce County, will hold to answer questions about how the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay from June 15 to June 21 will affect life in the city.

Among the information to be shared will be:

  • The latest updates and maps on impacted traffic areas. Even though the majority of all spectators will be bussed to Chambers Bay, there will still be significant traffic congestion due to the number of national and international media in town covering the event, as well as USGA staff and volunteers.

  • Locations of the USGA-approved parking zones for event sponsors, volunteers and employees.

  • Representatives of Pierce County Parks and Recreation will be on hand to address Chambers Creek Regional Park closures, including when areas of the park are scheduled to re-open following the conclusion of the Open.

  • The Pierce County Sheriff's Department personnel will be available to explain maritime security zones and shoreline closures related to the event which will impact boaters and kayakers.
There will be no formal speakers at the open house, so the public is invited to stop by anytime during the two-hour period. "This is truly just one last chance for people to ask those 'in the know' questions they may have about what to expect during the Open," says Jennifer Hales, public safety administrator for the University Place Police Department.

She points out that Championship impacts are already taking place, with many areas of Chambers Creek Regional Park currently closed to the public. "Even though the championship round begins on June 18, the practice rounds begin on June 15. Our preparations will be complete well in advance of that date so that when the golfers, Championship officials and media arrive we will be ready. We ask the public to become informed about the impacts during this spectacular event and to manage their expectations accordingly."
