Councilmember Doug Richardson’s Statement on JBLM Personnel Drawdown and Transportation Funding

U.S. Army officials announced last week that Joint Base Lewis-McCord will reduce troop strength by 1,250, a number that is much lower than previously proposed.

“The reduced personnel drawdown is great news for Pierce County and District 6,” said Councilmember Doug Richardson. “The U.S. Army’s presence in the Pacific Northwest is key to our National Defense Strategy and the “Pivot to the Pacific.” I am pleased that Pierce County will continue to be home for many of our Soldiers and Airmen. These service members at Joint Base Lewis-McCord are an integral part of our communities.”

A 494 million dollar transportation proposal was approved by the Washington State Legislature to improve the I-5 corridor to help alleviate traffic congestion around the installation

“The transportation package will fund huge improvements along the I-5 corridor in Pierce County. By improving our highway, we can help service members, retirees, civilian workers, and Pierce County residents travel safely and efficiently.”
