Plan ahead to maximize your Social Security benefits

For people planning on receiving Social Security now or in the future, knowing how to make the benefits is critical. A few simple tips can save beneficiaries thousands of dollars. And for those currently receiving Social Security benefits, there may be ways to increase the benefits in the long term.

“Social Security: Everything You Need to Plan Ahead” is a free, fast-paced one-hour presentation for anyone anticipating their benefits and those currently receiving benefits. The presenter will be Kirk Larson, Western Washington Public Affairs Specialist for the Social Security Administration.

“For most people Social Security is the cornerstone of retirement,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Aging & Disability Resources. “Knowing which benefits are available and how they can be maximized is absolutely essential. And no one presents this information better than Social Security’s Kirk Larson.”

This informational workshop will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Evergreen State College Tacoma Campus, 1210 6th Ave. in Tacoma.

The free workshop will present strategies that can maximize benefits including when to begin receiving benefits and the advantages of making claims based on spousal work history. Participants will also learn how to negotiate the rules about working, either full or part time, while receiving benefits.

One of the best ways to understand benefits is by opening and using your “mySocial Security” Online Account. Before attending the class participants are encouraged to open an account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount/, print it out, and bring their Social Security statement.

“Social Security: Everything You Need to Plan Ahead” is sponsored by the Pierce County Community Connections Aging & Disability Resource Center. No RSVP is required. For more information, call (253) 798-4600 or (800) 562-0332.
