New traffic signal system to be activated at 52nd Street East and 66th Avenue East April 12

A new traffic signal system will be activated at the intersection of 52nd Street East and 66th Avenue East near Puyallup on April 12 to improve intersection operations.

Currently, there is a stop sign on 52nd Street East where it intersects with 66th Avenue East at this T-shaped intersection.

In addition to the new signal, crosswalks that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act will be installed.

Motorists can expect intermittent delays on April 12 as the signal is activated and the crosswalks are installed. There will be alternating one-way traffic at times. Motorists should use alternate routes when possible.

In the event of inclement weather, the signal may be activated in two stages. Once the electrical work is complete, the signal will operate in a flashing mode until the pavement markings and signage are installed. If it rains, the markings installation will be postponed and the flashing operation will remain in place until weather permits. The full traffic signal operation will be activated once the markings and signage are installed.

The intersection was recently enlarged to increase turning space for larger vehicles. Foundations and electrical cabinets for the traffic signal system were also installed.

Transportation Systems Inc. is the contractor. The construction cost is approximately $240,000. The project is funded by County Road Funds.

A project webpage is available here.
