[ARCHIVED] June 25 open house planned on sewer interceptor rehabilitation project in University Place

The public is invited to an open house June 25 to learn about Pierce County’s upcoming rehabilitation of 9,600 feet of sewer pipe and about 30 manholes located along Grandview Drive W. in University Place. The work will start in July, and continue through spring 2013.

“The purpose of the Grandview Interceptor Rehabilitation project is to prevent a pipe failure due to corrosion from high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, which comes from naturally occurring bacteria,” said Steve Chanfrau, Sewer Utility project manager. “A failure could result in sinkholes and sewage spills. During the open house, the public can learn more about the project and the anticipated traffic delays due to construction.”

The open house will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. June 25 at the Environmental Services Building, located at 9850 64th St. W. in University Place. Sewer Utility employees will give a short presentation about the project, and lead a question and answer session.

Project overview
Crews will begin rehabilitation of the 24-year-old, 30-inch diameter interceptor that runs along Grandview Drive W. this summer between Heitman Way W. and 64th Street W. An interceptor is a sewer line that receives wastewater from multiple collector pipes and transmits it to the wastewater treatment plant.

Crews will line the pipe with Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP), a hollow tube-shaped pipe liner that protects the pipe from hydrogen sulfide. By using the CIPP technology, large road excavations can be avoided.

Minor traffic delays are expected on Grandview Drive W. as sections of the roadway will periodically be limited to one lane.

Two phases
The county’s contractor will rehabilitate the pipe in two phases. Insituform Technologies was awarded the bid for Phase 1 at a cost of $1.3 million. Phase 2 will be bid as a separate contract.

Phase 1, which will occur in July, August and September, will start on Grandview Drive W. at Heitman Way W. and extend to Cirque Drive W. Temporary 24-inch plastic bypass pipe will be placed in the bike lane on one side of the road for the entire phase. By temporarily installing the above-ground sewer bypass pipe, Pierce County will be able to reduce the overall duration of the project.

Phase 2 construction runs from Cirque Drive W. to 64th Street W. Work on this area will begin in the fall of 2012 and last through the spring of 2013. The majority of the bypass piping for Phase 2 will be located on county property next to the Grandview trail. The trail will remain open during construction.
