[ARCHIVED] Crews to activate new signals at two Canyon Road intersections; new lanes to open

Crews to activate new signals at two Canyon Road intersections; new lanes to open

Pierce County will activate new traffic signals at two intersections of Canyon Road E in Frederickson on Wednesday and Thursday, resulting in lane restrictions over a two-hour period each day.

• Lane restrictions at the intersection of Canyon Road E and Military Road E will occur between 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.
• Lane restrictions at the intersection of Canyon Road E and Brookdale Road E/160th St. E will occur between 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Crews will close lanes as needed during the work. Minimal traffic delays are expected.

New lanes opened
The stretch of Canyon Road E from 160th Street E to 172nd E has been expanded to three lanes in each direction. Currently, there are two lanes in each direction. The two new lanes will open to traffic once both intersections reopen.

The existing traffic signal systems at both intersections had to be rebuilt in order to accommodate the expanded roadway.

Part of larger project
Pierce County is making a variety of improvements to this 0.75-mile section of Canyon Road E to improve safety and relieve traffic congestion. In addition to modifying the traffic signals and expanding the roadway, the county is also:

• Adding paved shoulders
• Adding raised medians with designated left turn lanes and u-turn lanes at select locations
• Adding concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks
• Adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment and storage facilities
• Adding street lighting

Construction is expected to be completed next month.

Northwest Construction, Inc. is the contractor for this project. The estimated final contract amount is approximately $5.6 million.

Additional project details are available on the Pierce County website here.
