Pierce County Superior Court would like to congratulate judges James Orlando and Jack Nevin who were both recently awarded the William O. Douglas award. The award is in recognition of over 20 years of diligent service on the bench and their commitment to the justice system in the State of Washington. The award was presented to the judges from John D. Allison, President of the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ).
About William Douglas:
US Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was the longest serving justice in the history of the US Supreme Court. He spent almost 40 years on the Supreme Court Bench. Justice Douglas is the only Supreme Court Justice from Washington State.
About Judge James Orlando: (on the right of the photo)
Judge Orlando was appointed to the Pierce County Superior Court Bench in September of 2000. Prior to his position with Superior Court, Judge Orlando worked as a municipal court judge and was a Pierce County Commissioner from 1995-2000. He was the Superior Court Presiding Judge from 2003-2005. Judge Orlando was the WSAJ Judge of the Year in 2010. He was also appointed to the Superior Court Judges Association’s Washington State Partnership Council on Juvenile Justice. Judge Orlando is a graduate of the University of Washington and he holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Puget Sound School of Law. Judge Orlando is the current Criminal Division Presiding Judge.
About Judge Jack Nevin: (on the left of the photo)
Judge Nevin was elected to the Pierce County Superior Court Bench in January of 2013. Prior to his position with Superior Court, Judge Nevin was a Pierce County District Court Judge for 17 years. Judge Nevin was an Active and Reserve Duty Judge Advocate General’s Corp in the United States Army from 1978 until 2009. His last three years he was the Chief Judge (IMA) of the US Army Court of Criminal Appeals and Commander of the US Army Reserve Legal Command. Judge Nevin is an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at Seattle School of Law. He was also the Washington State Trial Lawyers Judge of the Year in 2003. Judge Nevin is a graduate of Washington State University and he holds an M.B.A./Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University.
