OFF-SITE 12-PERSON CIVIL JURY TRIALS
Pierce County Superior Court will begin 12-person Civil Jury Trials at two off-site locations beginning Monday, November 2nd. Due to the COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, court operations at the County-City Building are severely limited. The court can hold five (5) 12-person criminal jury trials and three (3) 6-person civil jury trials. In order to accommodate 12-person civil jury trials, the court needed to find off-site locations which could support the courtroom, jury deliberation room, staff offices and room for attorneys to meet with their clients. Two locations were chosen: Remann Hall Juvenile Court, 5501 6th Ave Tacoma, and Lakewood Community Center, 9112 Lakewood Dr SW Lakewood 98499. Remann Hall can hold one jury trial, while Lakewood Community Center can host two jury trials simultaneously. The court expects to use these facilities at least through the end of 2020, but we are working with the County on funding resources to maintain the use of these facilities in 2021.
Jurors will still participate in orientation and voir dire at the County-City Building and then will report to their designated off-site location for trial. Jurors and court participants will be provided clear instruction on where and when to report to the off-site locations. Jurors who must report to an off-site courtroom will receive additional mileage compensation.
Superior Court would like to thank the City of Lakewood, Pierce County Facilities Management, Pierce County Parks and Recreation, Pierce County Executive’s Office, the Pierce County Council and Pierce County Juvenile Court for their assistance in making this project happen.
