Beginning in June, work will occur on an existing levee owned and maintained by Pierce County within the Mount Rainier National Park (MRNP) entrance area at state Route 706. Work is expected to be complete in October.
Shoulder Closure
The levee access road located at the end of 387th Ave Ct E and the shoulder along SR 706 by the Nisqually River will be closed to pedestrians. The levee access road will remain permanently closed to the public. A map of the project is available at www.piercecountywa.gov/NisquallyLeveeProtection.
Truck volume is expected to increase during construction. Truck traffic will increase for rock delivery, and the in-water construction work will start July 19.
About the project
This stretch of the levee suffers repetitive, severe flood damage during moderate-to-high-flow events. Repairs to the levee are very costly and continue to mount.
This Pierce County Planning and Public Works project will install energy dissipating structures along the face of the existing levee that reduce flood risk and annual maintenance of the levee in the upper Nisqually. Stream diversions will be constructed around the work area so the base of the structures can be placed below the active river channel, making them erosion resistant.
