Pierce County declares July as Park and Recreation Month

The Pierce County Council has issued a proclamation recognizing July as “Park and Recreation Month” in Pierce County, Washington, joining the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in its July dedication to encourage residents to ”get out, explore, and play at a park near you.” The proclamation acknowledged that the enjoyment of outdoor spaces is at the heart of quality of life in the Pacific Northwest and provided an important respite during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each July, the NRPA announces a theme to encourage park enthusiasts to share their love for recreation and highlight their favorite spaces. This year’s theme is “Our Park and Recreation Story” and Pierce County is participating by sharing stories from the community. Residents who have experienced meaningful “Everyday Adventures” in parks, on trails or at recreation programs and events in Pierce County are encouraged to share their stories on social media.

To showcase the remarkable and diverse parks and recreation opportunities in Pierce County, community members are asked to share their pictures or videos on Facebook and Instagram during the month of July and express how parks and recreation have affected their lives. To join in on this year’s theme, participants are asked to tag @PierceCountyParks and use the hashtags #OurParkandRecStory and #EverydayAdventures so their posts can be shared on the Pierce County social media accounts. These stories will help illustrate how our community is stronger, more vibrant and more resilient thanks to local parks and recreation.

Those looking to create new park and recreation memories in July can check out the below upcoming Pierce County Parks activities.
