Pierce County seeks public input on early environmental findings for River Crossing Bridge project

Early findings from an environmental review of a proposed new bridge across the Puyallup River into Fife are available for public review and comment through Friday, Sept. 24.

The bridge project – known as the River Crossing – is part of the Canyon Road Regional Connection Project, which will extend Canyon Road East from south of Pioneer Way East, where it ends today, to 52nd Street East, and from 52nd Street East to 70th Avenue East.

The community can review these findings by visiting the online open house website through Friday, Sept. 24. Pierce County will also host a virtual town hall on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 7-8 p.m. to answer questions about the environmental process, findings and the project. Register here.

The online open house and virtual town hall are opportunities for remote participation in the environmental process during the ongoing pandemic. The public can also submit comments in the following ways:

  • Comment online at openhouse.canyonroadconnection.org
  • Attend a virtual town hall on Sept. 15 from 7-8 p.m. to hear from project staff directly. Register here.
  • Call a 24/7 telephone hotline at 253-330-8831 to leave a voicemail message about the project.
  • Email comments to [email protected].

Pierce County, the Federal Highway Administration and the Washington State Department of Transportation are conducting the environmental review to comply with the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

In the summer of 2020, Pierce County engaged the community in the scoping phase of the process to gather input about what to study. The preliminary findings reflect that feedback, with information on areas like air and water quality, cultural resources, noise, traffic, and drainage.

About the project
The Canyon Road Regional Connection Project will extend Canyon Road East from Pioneer Way East to 70th Avenue East in Fife – completing an important connection between Frederickson and the Port of Tacoma.

The River Crossing Project will replace the aging Milroy Bridge with a new, four-lane concrete bridge over the Puyallup River. In addition to improving traffic conditions, the River Crossing Project will improve water quality through a better system for managing stormwater runoff in the area. Construction is planned to begin in 2025, pending funding. Learn more about the River Crossing and other elements of this critical project at www.canyonroadconnection.org
