Lunch and Learn #2: Flexible neighborhood design codes to support attainable housing and “missing middle” September 30, 2021 @ 12 – 1:30 p.m. Virtual and In-PersonPierce County has adopted development standards that provide greater flexibility for the design and subdivision of infill neighborhoods for small housing types including the “missing middle”. The new standards, known as Urban Infill Design and Infill Lot Creation, are available for properties that meet certain criteria in Pierce County’s unincorporated urban area. The new standards limit homes to 1,400 square feet, a size which can be more affordable than typical single-family homes built today. These smaller homes are often referred to as “missing middle housing” and include tiny homes, cottages, townhouses, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes. Encouraging more diverse housing options in Pierce County expands opportunities for homeownership, especially for middle income families, first-time homebuyers and those looking to downsize. |
