Movement of Deputy Calata

Sent on behalf of the Sheriff’s Department

On Saturday, we moved Deputy Dom Calata from St. Joseph Medical Center to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. Deputy Calata was escorted by our SWAT Team, while deputies, staff and other law enforcement and fire departments lined the route to honor him.

On March 16, Deputy Calata died from injuries sustained during a shooting on March 15 while he was part of a SWAT operation. Sgt. Rich Scaniffe was critically injured during the incident. He was released from the hospital on March 18 to recover at home.

Our entire department would like to thank St. Joseph’s Medical Center staff for their support and care during this difficult time. We also thank the community and our law enforcement and fire department partners for being with us and showing their support.

Memorials and Public Gathering Spaces

March 17, 2022

We have received many inquiries about where community members can gather to honor Deputy Calata and show support for our department members. We have set up memorials in front of our South Hill Precinct (271 John Bananola Way E) and the Edgewood Police Department (2224 104th Ave E). We invite the public to leave flowers or messages, or even just gather to show support.
