Candidate filing week begins Monday, May 15

Candidate filing week begins Monday, May 15, 2023. Offices open for election this year include: 

  • Pierce County Council District 2
  • Court of Appeals Division 2, District 1, Pos 2
  • Pierce County Superior Court 1
  • Port
  • Cities and towns
  • Schools
  • Fire
  • Park and Recreation
  • Water
  • Sewer

Approximately 186 nonpartisan local offices are open for election this year in Pierce County. Offices where more than two candidates file will appear in the Aug. 1 Primary Election. All other offices will advance to the General Election in November (RCW 29A.52.220).

Additionally, Pierce County Council District 2 will appear on the Primary and General Election ballots as a partisan race. This election will be for a one-year unexpired term.

Filing for Office
Online candidate filing opens Monday, May 15, at 9 a.m. To file your declaration of candidacy go to PierceCountyElections.org. Candidates needing help should call 253-798-VOTE. Candidates who come to the office will file using the online system at a kiosk.

Filing week runs through Friday, May 19. Online filing closes at 4 p.m. In-person filing ends at 4:30 p.m. at the Pierce County Election Center, located at 2501 S. 35th St. Suite C in Tacoma.

A lot drawing to determine the candidate order on the ballot will take place after the close of filing on Friday, May 19 (approximately 4:45 p.m.) at the Pierce County Election Center. All candidates and the public are invited to observe.
