On May 9, the Pierce County Council issued a proclamation recognizing the month of May 2023 as “Mental Health Month” in Pierce County, joining the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in its May dedication to raise awareness about mental health. The proclamation acknowledged that the area someone lives in plays a significant role in their overall health and wellbeing, and that having a safe, stable and health home sets the foundation for maintaining good mental health.
Pierce County and its partners have made progress and remain dedicated to improving mental health outcomes by working to reduce the stigma and misconceptions about mental illness so that those in need can take that brave first step to seek assistance. The community is called upon to follow this year’s theme, “Look Around, Look Within,” to increase understanding of mental health and to reduce stigma.
The proclamation was received by Lovey Offerle, President of NAMI Pierce County and Pierce County Behavioral Health Advisory Board member.
