Adoption of 2021 Building Codes postponed to Nov. 1, 2023

Adoption of the 2021 Washington State Building Codes has been postponed, with an anticipated effective date in Pierce County of Nov. 1, 2023.

Previously, the effective date was July 1, 2023. However, the Washington State Building Code Council voted on May 24, 2023 to delay the effective date of the 2021 codes. For the most up-to-date code adoption information, please refer to the State Building Code Council’s website.

Building permit applications submitted, accepted, and paid for prior to Nov. 1 will be reviewed under the 2018 code.

We will send reminders about the 2021 code effective date prior to Nov. 1.
