WIP Pilot 1: Celebrating Lessons & Successes

Dear Valued PPW Customers,

Pierce County Planning & Public Works (PPW) closed the book on the first test in our effort to redesign the permit review process.

The Permit Workflow Improvement Project’s (WIP) first pilot tested new concepts in permit review and evaluated the feasibility of approving a single-family residential project in 15 days or less. As we wrap up Pilot 1, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to all participants and share the progress we've made together.

Here's a glimpse of what we learned and achieved during Pilot 1:

  • Processed Applications: We successfully processed and approved 41 applications. This accomplishment demonstrates our commitment to challenging the status quo and finding new ways to serve you efficiently.
  • Swift Review Times: On average, permits went from Accepted to Approved in just under six days, cutting normal review times nearly in half. This achievement reflects our dedication to providing timely services.
  • Greater Understanding: Our pilot review team gained valuable insights into the benefits of performing integrated reviews of applications, and how we may be able to reduce resubmittals and rework through collaboration.

What’s Next?

This pilot is one of several initiatives planned under the WIP. Expect additional improvements and pilots testing concepts in the coming months. Pilot 2, which is live through the end of the year, will explore strategies that may lead to improved quality and more timely delivery of public agency projects.

We are committed to taking the lessons learned from all the pilots and turning them into meaningful process improvements that will facilitate a more streamlined and effective review process for all applications.
