Local golfers are preparing to test their skills against the top amateurs in the region at the 48th annual Puget Sound Amateur, to be held May 18-19 at Lake Spanaway Golf Course and Chambers Bay.
Players will compete in a 36-hole stroke play format for up to $9,000 in prizes and the title of 2013 Puget Sound Amateur Champion. Registration is $180, and space is limited to the first 156 paid entries.
The deadline to register is Monday, May 13. Registration forms are available on both golf courses’ websites: www.lakespanawaygc.com and www.chambersbaygolf.com.
The first day’s rounds will take place at Lake Spanaway Golf Course, the longtime home of the Puget Sound Amateur. The second day will be played at Chambers Bay, which hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur and is preparing for the 2015 U.S. Open. Both courses are owned by Pierce County and offer unique and challenging championship conditions.
The championship attracts competitive golfers from across the Pacific Northwest. Last year, Craig Larson from Tacoma Firs Golf Center came from one shot back to defeat first-round leaders Alex Williams of West Seattle and Bryan Jan of Chambers Bay. Previously, Derek Barron of Puyallup won consecutive championships in 2010 and 2011, and PGA Tour players Kyle Stanley and Ryan Moore are past champions.
“This is the second consecutive year we are pairing Lake Spanaway with Chambers Bay,” said Mike Fosnick, the general manager of Lake Spanaway and coach of the women’s golf team at Pacific Lutheran University. “This is a unique experience for golfers in the Northwest, as the courses test players in different ways."
Lake Spanaway Golf Course is located next to Spanaway Park, one of the most popular facilities in the Pierce County Parks and Recreation system. The course offers players tree-lined Pacific Northwest scenery.
Chambers Bay is located on the shores of Puget Sound in University Place. The Scottish links layout features windswept dunes, undulating greens, native fescue grass and just one tree.
