Gift of PreparednessThe holidays are a time of gifting to friends and family. Consider gifts to keep those you care about safe! TWO WEEKS ready and safe!
Gifts to consider are: containers of water, easy to prepare food, car preparedness kits, commuter kits, headlamps, NOAA all hazard radios or offer to take a HAM radio class with a family member. Look at items we recommend for a "Grab and Go" or home base kit and consider some of the items as gifts. Happy Holidays.

Get Ready for Winter WeatherPierce County is gearing up for winter weather and you should do the same. The Pierce County Department of Emergency Management encourages you to take time now to create emergency kits for your home, car and workplace. You should also create a family plan to identify an out of state emergency contact, and a plan where you will meet if your family is separated. Pierce County Planning and Public Works plays an important role in responding to winter weather. The department responds to roadway flooding, river flooding, windstorms and snow and ice events. It also manages storm cleanup.

National Household Survey Results on Individual and Community PreparednessThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released the results from the 2018 National Household Survey (NHS). Every year, FEMA surveys the American public to assess how the culture of personal disaster preparedness and resilience has changed over time. The NHS also measures individuals’ attitudes and behaviors regarding preparedness and assesses what influences them to begin preparing for a future hazard. Estimates from the 2018 NHS suggest that an increasing percentage of the American public are actively preparing for disasters. - 57% percent have taken three or more basic actions to prepare. That’s eleven percentage points higher than last year’s estimate.
- 94% percent have taken at least one action to prepare.
- 67% percent of adults have set aside some money for an emergency, although most have set aside less than $500.
- When focusing on areas at higher risk of certain disasters, residents in areas at risk for hurricanes are most likely to have taken preparedness actions.

Warm your Heart this Winter - Prepare Because You CareValentines day reminds us of romantic love, life partners, spouses, those we care about and just plain warmth.
This Valentines, consider doing preparedness activities with those whom you care about. Gather and make a family plan, play preparedness games, eat chocolate and talk about preparing, and yes...because you care.

Neighborhood PreparednessProfessional responders will not be available to assist your neighborhood after a major disaster, you become the first responder. If individuals and their neighbors are prepared to mutually assist one another, lives can be saved and property can be spared.A preparedness presentation can be provided to your neighborhood with an explanation of Pierce County Neighborhood Emergency Teams (PC NET) and Map Your Neighborhood. Your neighborhood determines which of these programs to use, materials to start either program are provided. Pierce County Neighborhood Emergency Teams is a facilitated process that takes place over a year, provides neighbors with information and tools necessary to work together for an effective response as a team, following emergencies and disasters.

|
|
Map Your Neighborhood is an abbreviated version of the Neighborhood Emergency Teams, with a focus on mapping the neighborhood and identifying what neighbors are willing to do in an event of an emergency. Less time commitment is required for this program.

Peggy LovellFord Retiring in JanuaryI want to express my gratitude to all those who have reached out to our office and I had been able to provide you with preparedness guidance. I wanted work that was more than a paycheck, and Pierce County Emergency Management has met that hope.
My joy will be hearing of how well residents in Pierce County do after a serious disaster. Maybe I will see you in the mountains. Take care and stay prepared!
