Pierce County Parks and Recreation

Camp Pierce volunteers and staff named Volunteer Group of the Month for August by the Emergency Food Network

Pierce County Parks and Recreation's Camp Pierce came to the Emergency Food Network's Repack Project and Mother Earth Farm ready to work and have fun doing it!

At the farm, they freed up weedy rhubarb for our food banks and lavender for our pollinators, shelled hundreds of dry beans and composted old seedlings.

At the Repack Project, they repackaged 2,400 pounds of oats. The hard work and support by Camp Pierce volunteers and staff were truly an inspiring example that we will carry with us the rest of summer!

Partner Profile: LeMay Inc., Pierce County Refuse

Pierce County Parks and Recreation’s special events would not be possible without the support of some amazing sponsors. One great sponsor that continues to rise to the top is LeMay Inc., Pierce County Refuse. Ric Thompson and crew have been an amazing group to work with! They have provided waste receptacles and clear stream recycle bins for a variety of special events and programs for the department over the past few years.

On top of providing great service, they have become an integral part of the annual Touch A Truck event that is held at Sprinker Recreation Center every September. Touch A Truck is a free event at which kids of all ages are invited to explore the world of BIG trucks. This event allows the public to climb, touch and honk the horns of some amazing rigs! They have quickly become one of the key pieces to the event by the number and type of rigs they provide. The drivers always do a fantastic job interacting with the public by explaining to the kids how the trucks operate as well as talking to them about their jobs. They are enthusiastic and very supportive.

Each year we hand out a “Fan Favorite” award to a few of the trucks in attendance. The award is highly coveted as it’s voted on by the kids! LeMay Inc., Pierce County Refuse swept the voting last year. They were awarded the honor by Executive Pat McCarthy during an all-county directors meeting.

Parks and Recreation is hosting the first annual Mobile Food Fest on Saturday August 22nd, at Sprinker Recreation Center. Ric jumped on board and offered to provide service for the event. Without amazing sponsors like LeMay Inc., Pierce County Refuse we wouldn’t be able to offer these kinds of free events to the public.

A BIG thank you to LeMay Inc., Pierce County Refuse and Ric Thompson and crew for their continued support of Pierce County Parks and Recreation. You guys rock!
