An update about COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
Wednesday’s announcement by Governor Inslee to ban events of more than 250 people changed the response to COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, dramatically. In some respects, this wasn’t a surprise as we have seen this situation grow daily.
In Pierce County there are 17 confirmed cases as of March 11. As more people are tested, expect more positive cases will be discovered in Pierce County. I have been closely monitoring the situation and am pleased with the hard work and dedication of our Pierce County staff to continue serving our community.
As this situation changes, keep in mind other, smaller events (both public and private) might be cancelled by the organizers. If you were planning on attending one of these events, check with the organizers if they are being rescheduled.
It's important to remember steps you can take during this changing situation. Caring for yourself is very important. Make sure the news isn't getting you too stressed and pay close attention to accurate, timely and reliable information. If the news sounds too good - or too bad - to be true, then look for other sources to confirm the story.
- Make sure you get plenty of rest.
- Wash your hands frequently. Rubs your hands together for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap.
- Cover your sneezes and coughs.
- Clean surfaces that are touched frequently.
- Stay home if you are sick.
If you are over 60 years old or have existing medical conditions, consider avoiding large groups or spending an extended period of time with people who might be sick. It is important to remember, however, that you cannot get sick from being around someone who is not sick but has been around another person with coronavirus.
It's also important to keep an eye on friends and family. Check in on them either in person or on the phone. Some people might feel alone or unsure of what they should do. Help them understand the situation and share that they can get reliable information at www.tpchd.org.
While this situation is serious, I strongly believe we can get through this together by remaining calm, informed and prepared.

Dave Morell
