Vision loss among older adults is a major health care problem. One senior in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease. The most common causes of vision loss among the elderly are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy. Only 2% of Low Vision patients seek vision rehabilitation due to barriers including: awareness, difficulty accessing services and training, the costs of care and devices, and anxiety and depression. Vision impairment is associated with a decreased ability to perform activities of daily living and an increased risk for depression. Dr. Seefeldt is President of the Hope Vision Foundation located in the South Sound.
