Updates on unauthorized encampments and street racing
This week the County Council’s Public Safety Committee received updates on two issues: street racing, and safety and security at unauthorized encampments. You can view both presentations online.
First, street racing has been on the rise in the South Sound region recently, and we have seen more and more cities in Pierce and King counties passing ordinances to deal with this. We had the opportunity to hear from several law enforcement agencies in the region on how they have worked to stop these dangerous events. Moving forward, I am hopeful that the Pierce County Council will join cities like Puyallup and Fife in addressing this issue for Pierce County and make sure we are making the safety of our residents a priority.
Second, Segreant Darren Moss shared with the committee the work the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and County are doing to clean up unauthorized encampments throughout Pierce County. While the focus of these cleanups is to address community safety, the department makes every effort to connect those they come across with services to help them out of homelessness.
Last week I had the opportunity to tour the Pierce County Sewer and Traffic Operations Facility (STOP) off 94th Avenue East in South Hill. It was great to learn more about the Pierce County Planning & Public Works Department and how they serve the people of Pierce County. The STOP Facility houses staff from Sewer Division Maintenance & Operations, Traffic Operations, and a section of Equipment Services Section. It is the one-stop shop for many Planning and Public Works operations in the county. This site was strategically chosen because the greatest concentration of both sewer and traffic infrastructure exists in the mid-county area.
I appreciate our Planning and Public Works team’s professionalism, talent, and deep commitment to keeping Pierce County running!
