District 6 Banner

Good morning neighbors,

I am pleased to share that my District 6 in-district meeting will be held in-person July 22 at the Sprinker Recreation Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The topic is Resilient Youth, and I’ve invited several local organizations that worked hard through the pandemic to come speak about the opportunities and resources they provide in the community. I am hopeful that we will finally get to meet face-to-face. However, because we will meet in this in-person format, we will not be able to offer remote attendance through Zoom like we have over the last year. Stay tuned for more information.

Fourth of July

As we near the upcoming three-day holiday weekend I want to make sure you know the rules around fireworks, how to report concerns and remind everyone to be considerate and think about your neighbors.

Depending on where you live – incorporated or unincorporated Pierce County – the rules may differ on when you can discharge fireworks.

Here is when you can use fireworks in District 6:

Unincorporated Pierce County:

  • July 1 to 3: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • July 4: 10 a.m. to midnight.
  • July 5 (this year because the Fourth is on a Sunday): 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

JBLM, Steilacoom & Tacoma: All fireworks banned.

DuPont: July 3 & 4: Noon to Midnight.

Lakewood: July 3 to 5: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

For more information about firework laws in unincorporated Pierce County visit the county’s fireworks page which outlines how to celebrate safely. West Pierce Fire and Rescue also has helpful tips on its website.

Legal vs. Illegal Fireworks

Fireworks stands open next week across the county. Remember if you choose to purchase fireworks at one of these stands that they are legal in MOST areas in our community, but not all. Visit the Washington State Patrol legal and illegal fireworks page to see what you can and cannot use in our state.

Reporting a Concern

The Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest times for law enforcement and emergency services. Between small fires, illegal events, drunk driving and general misconduct and crime, 911 gets a workout. So, what do you report and to who?

If it is an emergency absolutely call 911.

However, if you are calling about a loud party, or reporting someone setting off illegal fireworks, please call the non-emergency number at 253-287-4455. I have asked that we track these calls and pull data on the number we get and their locations.

Have a Safe & Happy Fourth of July

I want to close with a reminder that we are neighbors and when you set off things that explode you are not the only one that hears it. In the 6th District we have thousands of veterans and active duty military. We have tens of thousands of pets and young children. Non-stop explosions can be traumatic for many people and pets. Please follow the law and only discharge your fireworks during the authorized times. This helps those adversely impacted better anticipate when to expect the loud noises and flashing lights.

So, take a moment to think about your neighbors when you decide how to celebrate.

Burn Ban takes effect June 25

A countywide burn ban takes effect at 8 a.m. Friday (June 25). The ban covers all unincorporated Pierce County and was issued at the direction of the Pierce County Fire Marshal because of the already dry conditions and expected heatwave that is set to hit the region this weekend.

The ban is in place until further notice and applies to all land clearing and yard debris outdoor burning. It does not apply to small recreational fires in established fire pits at approved campgrounds or private property with the owner’s permission. Use of gas and propane self-contained stoves and barbecues are allowed under the ban. It also does not apply to the use of fireworks, though again people are encouraged to be smart about where they use fireworks and making sure they are fully extinguished. Learn more at the county fire marshal website.

Community Connections

Here are a few upcoming events in District 6 that people can attend.

FerryFest presented by Lakewold Gardens: This family friendly event is happening this weekend (June 25 to 27) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They have a full schedule of different types of activities and opportunities for our community. Tickets and information can be found at the Lakewold Gardens FairyFest Page.

Anderson Island Salmon Bake: Anderson Island is once again hosting its annual fundraiser for the Anderson Island Historical Society. Though canceled last year like so many things, the event is back on July 3 from noon to 3 p.m. Learn more at the AIHS Event page.

Celebrate safely, be a good neighbor and have a wonderful Fourth of July!
