District 3 Banner

Hello neighbors,

It has been two weeks since I shared an update from the health department on the landfill and they sent information late last week detailing the latest around the work LRI continues to do to address the odor issues.

Email from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department:

We know the community is still dealing with odors and we still need folks to email the landfill when they are experiencing odors. Please let the landfill know when you notice the odors, so they have a chance to get out there and observe them firsthand. If you are uncomfortable giving them your address, then the nearest road and cross street so they can get as close as possible with their survey. We continue to monitor the progress made by the landfill to expand their landfill gas collection system and addressing odor issues both onsite and offsite.

LRI has completed the following projects:

  • Biofilter layer installed at the toe of Cell 8 (west side).
  • Extended south header to west corner of Cell 8 (approx. 400 ft.).
  • Completed header on the west side of Cell 8 and connected to the existing header (Cell 5 and 6) (approx. 900 ft.).
  • Three shallow wells were connected to the GCCS on the west side of Cell 8.
  • Five horizontal gas collectors connected on the south and west side of Cell 8.
  • One perimeter gas collector installed in the toe of Cell 8 (south and west side) and connected to the gas system .
  • Applied soil cover to seal off remaining area (ongoing).
  • Installed approximately 4 acres of plastic tarps on soil-covered slopes.
They continue to:
  • Continue to perform daily inspections of cover integrity, well performance and any off-site odors.
    • Contracted engineers are identifying wells on the landfill that need work.
  • Perform daily odor patrols, conduct tours and respond to calls from neighbors.
    • You can email LRI Landfill for tour information or to report odors at [email protected].
  • Look into having an independent third party perform odor surveys.
  • Review the technology currently available for odor monitoring.
They plan to:
  • LRI staff met with their engineering team to discuss vertical wells siting and design review for well installation scheduled for May.
  • LRI staff is planning installation of three shallow wells on the west/southwest of Cell 7 to increase coverage in this area and three shallow horizontal collectors on the western portion of current fill deck as a temporary means to control potential LFG emission in this area.
  • Drill and connect 15 more wells in June 2022.
