5 Winter Adventures For January

#1 MT TAHOMA TRAILS

The largest no-fee Hut-to-Hut Trail System in North America for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is open daily, weather permitting. Effective immediately, day users of the trail system are welcome to enter and use the warming huts until 7 PM. The Mt. Tahoma trails are in a wilderness setting. A snow park permit is required, and all vehicles should carry tire chains. Visitors should be prepared for backcountry travel and carry the 10 essentials. New to the trail system? #2 CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN RESORT

Washington’s largest ski resort, Crystal Mountain Resort is open daily, weather permitting. New Après Music Series featuring local bands scheduled every Friday from 4-6 pm and Saturday 3-5 pm through mid-March. Alpenglow Snowshoe Tour & Dinner on Jan. 27.

#3 NORTHWEST TREK WILDLIFE PARK

Reconnect with wildlife. Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is open this month Fri-Sun: 9:30 am-3 pm. Closed: Mon-Thurs. Open during special holiday hours on Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day), Jan. 16 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), and Feb. 20 (Presidents’ Day). #4 WINTER TRAIL RIDES

EZ Times Outfitters offers guided trail rides daily, weather permitting from Elbe, WA. To check availability and rates call (253) 350-1141. Forest trail rides are $40 an hour. Nisqually River rides for $60 an hour. There is a 250LB weight limit per rider.

#5 MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

The trails, National Park Inn, and Longmire General Store are open daily in the historic Longmire district. The road to Paradise (starting at the gate at Longmire) will be closed Monday-Friday and open weekends only, weather permitting.

MOOSE AT THE MOUNTAIN

Mount Rainier National Park reported the first recorded moose sighting. The moose was spotted walking up a snowy hill in the Sunrise/White River area.
