Is smoke testing harmful to humans, pets, or furniture?: Pierce County uses a water based smoke that is more like a vapor. It leaves no residue and contains no explosive materials. The smoke is not harmful to humans or most pets, but if you have chronic respiratory problems (are on oxygen, etc.) or have small pets such as birds, please contact the Sewer Utility at (253) 798-3440 when you receive the door hanger notice.

1. Is smoke testing harmful to humans, pets, or furniture?: Pierce County uses a water based smoke that is more like a vapor. It leaves no residue and contains no explosive materials. The smoke is not harmful to humans or most pets, but if you have chronic respiratory problems (are on oxygen, etc.) or have small pets such as birds, please contact the Sewer Utility at (253) 798-3440 when you receive the door hanger notice.

2. What can I expect during smoke testing in my neighborhood?: You will receive a door hanger the day before smoke testing occurs in your neighborhood. To prepare your house for testing, pour 24oz. of water in unused sinks, tubs, or floor drains. This should keep smoke from entering your home.
Did you know? Pouring water in unused drains also keeps harmful gases emitted from the sewer system from entering your home? It is good practice to regularly pour water in unused drains.

3. What if I do see smoke in my house?: Less than 1% of homes tested have smoke enter them. If it happens to you, open your doors and windows. The smoke will quickly dissipate. This also means you may have a break in your internal plumbing or a broken clean out cap. Call your plumber.

4. How long does the smoke testing take?: The process is quick. One 3-minute smoke bomb covers 800 feet of sewer line. Maintenance crews will be in and out of your neighborhood in one day.
