1. Why is this project being done?

This project will increase capacity and environmental benefit at the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. As the population increases and new customers connect, we need to expand the treatment capability of the plant and replace aging infrastructure before it wears out. In addition, the expansion project is providing jobs in the construction field for the centralized region.

2. How long will construction last?

Construction is expected to continue through 2016.

3. What will the expansion project consist of?

• New treatment technology for enhanced nitrogen removal.
• Increased odor control.
• Expansion of the biosolids processing system that produces SoundGRO® fertilizer.
• Expanded disinfection capacity and new processing equipment.
• New laboratory, operations, maintenance and warehouse facilities.

4. What are the traffic impacts during construction?

The expansion project is projected to temporarily add an estimated 400 workers at the peak of construction beginning in December of 2013. A turn lane will be added on Chambers Creek Road at 64th Street West in University Place to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection. Construction began on Aug. 15 and is expected to be complete in the beginning of September.

5. Will there be noise or odors?

Standard noise associated with heavy construction activity is expected. Occasional work will be done at night, but sound will stay within the allowable decible levels. The contractor continues to coordinate with the City of University Place to ensure construction activities remain within the allotted time frame. General odor is not expected to increase during this project. However, isolated odor events may occur infrequently. The construction team has guidelines in place to mitigate potential odors and minimize any impacts.

6. Will sewer services be interrupted during the construction?

There will be no interruptions to your sewer service during this project. The wastewater treatment plant will continue day-to-day operations throughout the duration of this project.

7. Will I still be able to purchase SoundGRO fertilizer?

SoundGRO sales will not be affected, however, the location for SoundGRO pick-up will change following construction—signs will be posted to notify customers of the new location.

8. Can I take a tour of the treatment plant?

Due to safety precautions, public tours of the treatment plant will not be available until construction is complete. Individuals who are interested in viewing construction activities can visit the trails on the Chambers Creek properties to see a wide angle view of the plant.
